Róbert Šebesta studied clarinet and music theory at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava as well as historical clarinets with Gilles Thomé and Eric Hoeprich in Paris. He plays all sorts of historical clarinets, chalumeaux and basset horns. As a soloist he performed W. A. Mozart & C. Stamitz Clarinet Concertos as well as Chalumeau Concertos by G. Ph. Telemann, J. Ch. Graupner and J. F. Fasch. He is co-founder of the wind sextet the Maria Theresia Ensemble and of the Lotz Trio, a basset horn ensemble. He performs regularly with orchestras Capella Cracoviensis, Orfeo Zenekar, Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsovienses, Musica Florea, Musica Aeterna, Solamente Naturali and Capella Savária. Róbert Šebesta also worked as a curator at the Music Museum of the Slovak National Museum. Since 2002 he has taught at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava. His research on historical clarinets, chalumeaux, and basset horns resulted in his master’s thesis, “History of the Basset Horn from its Origins until 1820,” and his doctoral dissertation, “The Chalumeau in the 18th Century.” Last article published in Journal of American Musical Instrument Society (2011) focuses a basset horn production of well known Czech instrument maker Franz Strobach.
